pride and prejudice is my favorite novel, which impresses me for a long time. it describes a love story mainly between elisabeth, who i like the best, and a rich and proud man, darcy.

the story began with the arrival of a crowd of rich men who rent a house near the bennet. in a ball, elisabeth gave such a bad impression on darcy’s first pride that she refused darcy’s first proposal. darcy was so surprised by elisabeth’s refusal that he loved elisabeth more deeply.

and elisabeth’s antipathy made darcy realize his shortcomings. he was not angry about elisabeth’s censure, but also he changed his previous proud attitude. during elisabeth’s travel in darcy’s manor. darcy was very nice to her uncle and aunt, different from previous proud attitude.

when one of elisabeth’s sisters ran away with wickham, darcy helped elisabeth find her sister and prevent her sister from the loss of reputation, with nobody knowing that it was he who helped the bennet. so many changes in darcy eliminated elisabeth’s prejudice. at last it end with their marriage.

taking the daily life as its material, this story reflected the life and love in a conservative and blocking england town. it reflected the author’s view about marriage that it is fault to marry for property, money and status and it is also foolish to take these elements into account.

in fact darcy’s pride manifested the gap between their statuses. since his pride existed, there is no ideal marriage between elisabeth and darcy. from the different attitudes from darcy’s two proposals, it reflected the feminine pursuit of personality independence and right equality, which is a progressive character from the image of elisabeth.

austin's "pride and prejudice", is a romantic and reality love story. as she says, is thin on two inches of ivory carving, it is the masterpiece of austin. the novels reflect the marriage problems is the most popular in the works of the authors, is her favorite works. works of vivid reflects the late 18th century to the early 19th century in a conservative and occlusion of the british town life and world.. love without romance is losing its beautiful colour. but in the novel, on suitable and wealth to consider marriage with in the text.

elizabeth for his family's behavior to the impact of very annoyed, darcy also advised mr bingley from jane, later he was in sense and sensibility after very contradictory to unbosom elizabeth. so what is love? in spite of all the pure feelings, love, pure white as the snow as a mirror of flowers in the month, in the love really is just fantasy, and the pursuit of people's minds, but in real life, people are always looking for the best balance between the two.

elizabeth resourcefulness, have courage, visionary, have very strong self-respect, and be good at thinking. miss is when a surge in the best, it is valuable. it is because of this quality, just make her in love have independent initiative, and led to her and the darcy composition content family. in elizabeth know wickham's real face at present the full of affection, but her aunt said such young marriage won't happiness, because he has no property without a stable income, elizabeth accept such views, and active control of their own feelings, so don't discredit for elizabeth and will only allow us to see a real sensible elizabeth, clever sensible girl.

darcy old money, carefree life, is also a respected in society, in that position, all virtue too much, generous, help others is good, these things are helpless and richness of his image, he is nothing evaluation.

from this love story happened in the uk, the hero and heroine, two people has gone through many kinds of joys and sorrows.there finally ruled out the misunderstanding before, to come together, live a happy happy days in the story, we can see what is? - the human nature, dignity and love...

in the way of the pursuit of love, must be in their own faith, don't because of money, fame, or for other reasons caocao decision, insist on finding true love. if the other party to some of the defect is himself can't stand, but also what you can't change, it should be decisive choice to give up; of course should also to cherish each other, don't because of other people's words will change their decision, happiness to yourself to run.

don't after losing just know to cherish, for the sake of happiness and courage.

main characters: the little prince, the pilot, the rose, the fox, the snake, etc.

despite i"ve not in my childhood yet, i still prefer reading fairy-tale stories. the tales, which accompany with me in my old days, often make me think of some precious experience and sensation which only belong to children. this summer i"ve review this kind of tale, which was published in 1940. it"s the world-famous fairy-tale by the french author, antoine de st-exupery, the little prince.

as many other fairy-tales, the outline of the little prince is not very complex. i, the narrator of the story, is a pilot whose plane has something wrong and lands in the sahara. in this occasion, the pilot makes the acquaintance of the little prince, a little boy from another planet, the asteroid b612. the little prince has escaped from his tiny planet, because he has some quarrel with a rose, which grows on his planet. in that case he left his own planet and took an exploration at some neighbor asteroids.

on his all-alone journey, the little prince meets different kinds of people, which includes a king, a conceited man, a tippler, a businessman, a lamplighter and a geographer. from these people he gets a conclusion that the grown-ups are very odd. following the instruction of the geographer, he descends in the sahara, on the earth.

traveling on the earth, the little prince, who sees a garden of five-thousand roses, is overcome with astonishment and sadness, as he considers his rose is unique in the universe before. at that time a fox appears. the fox, who tell the little prince about the meaning of the word tame, becomes his new friend. at the time to say farewell, the fox makes him know that his rose is unique because she is his rose and tamed by him. from that the little prince begins to treasure friendship and be responsible to his rose.

at the anniversary day of his descent of the earth, rejecting the pilot"s advice, he goes back to his own planet by bite of a snake. it"s too far. i can not carry this body with me. it"s too heavy. he said. he tells his friend, the pilot, he must be responsible for his rose, so he has to go back. at the end the author doesn"t tell us the ending directly. maybe it"s more significant for us to imagine, and for more, think over.

one of the important characters is the rose. growing on the planet, she is very beautiful, but her coquetry and vanity suffer the little prince a lot. in spite of they love each other, he soon becomes unhappy. on the time of his departure, he just knows she certainly loves him. the character of the little prince actually represents the children, and their native thoughts and deeds. on the contrary, the inhabitants on the other planets, such as the king, the businessman and the conceited man, they also reflect the defects in the grown-up"s world. the real theme of this fairy-tale with a little sadness, i guess, is the consequence of pure love and friendship in our lives, but not others matters of consequence of the grown-ups.

unbelievable, this little book moved me a lot. i seldom think about the true meaning of love and life before. well, now i can say, with my short sixteen-year"s life experience, it"s like the stars in the sky that lit my heart. the little prince is not only an ordinary fairy-tale for children, but also for grown-ups, and our teenagers. nevertheless, when i read this book, i feel a little sad ndash; about ourselves, whom are losing more and more innocence.

thoughts on great expectations

during the last month, i have been reading the novel named great expectations by charles dickens. i set up my mind to finish reading it for the simple reason that i have read the chinese version of this great novel and i was deeply attracted by the story.

the main character in this novel is pip and the whole story goes like this: pip was a orphan and was brought up by his sister “by hand”. his sister mrs. joe was very strict with him while his brother-in-law treat him kindly. as a result, the two developed a intimate relationship. since pip was asked to visit miss havishams’s house, his mind and his fate began to change. in miss havishams’s home, pip saw her adopted daughter estella and fell in love with her at the first sight. then he was determined to be well-educated and become a gentleman in order to deserve the beautiful girl estella. and much to his delight, he was given a large sum of money and an opportunity to study abroad by an anonymous person. after a period of time, his great expectations came true and he became a gentleman at last. however, he found out that the money was offered by the criminal he had saved when he was young. he felt ashamed and didn’t want to use the money any more. what’s worse, the criminal magwitch escaped from prison to visit pip and was noticed by the police. at last, magwitch was sentenced to death and pip led a normal life. the beautiful lady became a widow as her husband died. but pip still loved her and promised to be friends with her all the same. this ending is a bit reaasuring.

among those several characters in the novel, my favourite is magwitch. he was homeless and poor when he was young and he used to be put into prison several times. no one cared about him, so when little pip saved him by giving him some food, he felt moved. and he bore pip’s help in his mind. when he was exiled overseas, he was determined to make a lot of money and help pip become a gentleman. he worked hard and saved every coin he could, and then sent it to pip. he did all of these secretly in order to prevent little pip from being embarrassed. after pip became a real gentleman, magwitch returned to england in secret only to see whether pip had led a good life. what we can find from him is deep love for pip. although the society has deserted him, he is not deserted by himself. different from miss havishams who is black-hearted, magwitch is like a father. he showed his love to pip without any hesitation. he was just like pip’s father. this is why i admire him very much.

then when i look back into our society, i find that some parents are not as good as the criminal magwitch. cases are that parents push their children to work hard in order to be admitted into the college where they were eager to go when they were young. this usually leads to two consequences. one is that the children are exerted too much pressure and they go to extremes. the other is that their children do as they are told to and don’t have their independent thinking. they lack the comprehensive abilities to cope with fierce competition in today’s society. in other words, they are likely to survive in this competitive world.

god is equal to everyone. when magwitch knew that estella was his daughter and had been loved by pip, he felt relieved. i am also relieved because one good turn deserves another.

in the book "little prince", my favorite is the last two chapters. the last second chapters wrote comforting, and the little prince told him that my planet was too small to show you. for you, my planet is just one of many stars. so you see all the stars like it.。. i like this paragraph very much. after that, i will see stars at night, and i will think of this magical book of little prince. the last chapter was written for six years. he was very sad. he was the most unique star in the sky. the sky was still smiling and twinkling in the night sky.

before leaving, the little prince finally told me that he had to go back to his own planet because he had left 1st anniversary, and he was very worried about that flower. shes so fragile! so naive. she has only four thorns, which can be used to protect herself. im responsible for her! the little princes attitude towards floret made me know that i should be conscientious and responsible for anything and get more harvest and happiness.

one of the most interesting questions about gullivers travels is whether the houyhnhnms represent an ideal of rationality or whether on the other hand they are the butt of swift's satire. in other words, in book iv, is swift poking fun at the talking horses or does he intend for us to take them seriously as the proper way to act? if we look closely at the way that the houyhnhnms act, we can see that in fact swift does not take them seriously: he uses them to show the dangers of pride.

first we have to see that swift does not even take gullver seriously. for instance, his name sounds much like gullible, which suggests that he will believe anything. also, when he first sees the yahoos and they throw excrement on him, he responds by doing the same in return until they run away. he says, "i must needs discover some more rational being," even though as a human he is already the most rational being there is. this is why swift refers to erasmus darwins discovery of the origin of the species and the voyage of the beagle-to show how gulliver knows that people are at the top of the food chain. but if lemule gulliver is satirized, so are the houyhnhnms, whose voices sound like the call of castrati. they walk on two legs instead of four, and seem to be much like people. as gulliver says, "it was with the utmost astonishment that i witnessed these creatures playing the flute and dancing a vienese waltz. to my mind, they seemed like the greatest humans ever seen in court, even more dextrous than the lord edmund burke" . as this quote demonstrates, gulliver is terribly impressed, but his admiration for the houyhnhnms is short-lived because they are so prideful. for instance, the leader of the houyhnhnms claims that he has read all the works of charles dickens, and that he can singlehandedly recite the names of all the kings and queens of england up to george ii. swift subtly shows that this houyhnhnms pride is misplaced when, in the middle of the intellectual competition, he forgets the name of queen elizabeths husband.

swifts satire of the houyhnhnms comes out in other ways as well. one of the most memorable scenes is when the dapple grey mare attempts to woo the horse that guenivre has brought with him to the island. first she acts flirtatiously, parading around the bewildered horse. but when this does not have the desired effect, she gets another idea: "as i watched in amazement from my perch in the top of a tree, the sorrel nag dashed off and returned with a yahoo on her back who was yet more monstrous than mr. pope being fitted by a clothier. she dropped this creature before my nag as if offering up a sacrifice. my horse sniffed the creature and turned away." it might seem that we should take this scene seriously as a failed attempt at courtship, and that consequently we should see the grey mare as an unrequited lover. but it makes more sense if we see that swift is being satiric here: it is the female houyhnhnm who makes the move, which would not have happened in eighteenth-century england. the houyhnhm is being prideful, and it is that pride that makes him unable to impress gullivers horse. gulliver imagines the horse saying, sblood, the notion of creating the bare backed beast with an animal who had held mr. pope on her back makes me queezy .

a final indication that the houyhnmns are not meant to be taken seriously occurs when the leader of the houynhms visits lilliput, where he visits the french royal society. he goes into a room in which a scientist is trying to turn wine into water (itself a prideful act that refers to the marriage at gallilee). the scientist has been working hard at the experiment for many years without success, when the houyhnmn arrives and immediately knows that to do: "the creature no sooner stepped through the doorway than he struck upon a plan. slurping up all the wine in sight, he quickly made water in a bucket that sat near the door" .

he has accomplished the scientists goal, but the scientist is not happy, for his livelihood has now been destroyed. swifts clear implication is that even though the houyhnhmns are smart, they do not know how to use that knowledge for the benefit of society, only for their own prideful agrandizement.

throughout gullivers travels, the houyhnhms are shown to be an ideal gone wrong. though their intent might have been good, they don't know how to do what they want to do because they are filled with pride. they mislead gulliver and they even mislead themselves. the satire on them is particularly well explained by the new born houyhnhm who, having just been born, exclaims, "with this sort of entrance, what must i expect from the rest of my life!"
