mark twain's short story with "one million pounds" is a very good work. article on the "money is everything" "money is omnipotent," the ideas of irony, exposed the ugly face of capitalist society.

"millions of pounds" refers to a poor, honest man, that is, the hero of this story has received a pair of brothers, a letter which gave him one million pounds. it turns out that the brothers played a bet, gambling, if a poor, honest man knocking on the door of one million pounds received, he will be what results? his brother that he would starve to death because he could not prove that the money was his own, will be someone else's question, even the banks do not let him save. little brother that he would be getting along very well, so they are brothers to one million pounds to lend a check of this poor people, and spent 30 days abroad.

mark twain's short story of "one million pounds" is a very good work. the article on the "money is everything," "money is omnipotent," the idea of a satire, to expose the ugly face of capitalist society.

"one million pounds" is about a poor, honest man, that is, the heroine of this story has received a pair of brothers, the letter sent to him inside one million pounds. the brothers had made a bet, gambling, if a poor, honest people who come knocking on the door received the one million pounds, he will be what kind of results? brother that he would starve to death because he could not prove that the money was his own, will be subject to other people's doubts, and even the banks do not let him save money. his younger brother that he would lead a very good, and therefore they have the brothers of one million pounds will be loaned to check the poorest people, and spent 30 days abroad. did not expect that during this period of time, people have the rare fortune suddenly rich, has tried to cozy up to him, from the free food, buy clothes, free accommodation, like a beggar, like to please him, and continue to improve his social status until the exception of the highest outdoor wang duke on! not only that, he also has been a good wife and 30,000 pounds of bank interest, and finally from two brothers got a very good job. lived a very, very happy life.

see here, i am so envious of the "lucky" the heroine, but at the same time i would like to: people reason to curry favor with him, not just because when people value money too it? worship of money is shameful and should not be reaping more! money is not omnipotent, the world than money, there are many more important things … …

my impressions after reading" the million pound note”.

this time i want to talk about a very famous short story written by mark twain---------“the million pound note”. referring to mark twain, you must feel familiar, because we must have read his works before. i still remember the article “ the bite events on the train” in our textbook when i’m in the middle school. what touched me most at that time were his ironic words. yes, he is a great humorist, novelist, writer and orator in america in nineteenth century. during his 40 years’ writing career, he created dozens of short or long stories, among which “the adventures of huckleberry finn” is of the most popularity, which was praised by hemingway as “the first real american literature”. but today i am introducing his another work------ the million pound note.

this story tells about a poor but honest american adam henry. when he was wandering in the street of london, he was given by two billionaires a letter, in which he surprisedly found a £1,000,000 pound bank-note. later he got to know that the two billionaires who were brothers had made a bet about the results after he got a one million-pound note at once. one of them thought the note wound count for nothing to the poor man because he could not prove that the money was his own while the other considered just as the opposite. dramatically, the plot went just out of my expectation. herry went to a restaurant to have dinner first. the manager was mean to him at the beginning but his attitude changed quickly when herry took out the note and asked for change. faced with a millionaire, the manager apologized again and again and obsequiously told herry that he didn’t need to pay for the bill right now. so herry managed to have a free dinner.

then similarly, herry went to a clothing shop and got a suit of clothes costing him nothing. like the plot above, people are curious of such a rich man and tried every means to cozy up to him, from free food, free clothes to free accommodation. at the same time, his social status was becoming higher and higher and finally higher than most dukes. apart from that, he later got a beautiful wife and 200,000 pounds of bank interest. i can imagine a bright future was waiting for him. the writing style of this story is so humorous. mark twain used hyperbole describing how our hero defeated snobbishness repeatedly. what i appreciate most is the detailed description of different people’s ridiculous actions before one million pounds, vivid, funny, ironic and humorous, which forms a caricature. in terms of the theme, it is apparent that the author wanted to denounce the overflowing mammonism in the society. even now it gives us an impressive lesson. yes, i cannot deny the importance of money to a person who wants to survive. we won’t live without money, with which we get food, clothes, house and many other

necessities. but we must know that there are many things which can’t be bought with money such as love or friendship. so in my opinion, money may be important to us, but not the most important. we need to build up the correct sense of money. another point i want to emphasize is honesty. from the plot, we can see that there were so many people the brothers could choose, so why just herry? i think it was because he was honest. when he got the note, what he did wasn’t use it right now but return it to the brothers. without a kind and honest heart, herry couldn’t have been such a successful man. there are various of tempertation alluring us in our life, only by keeping honesty and consciousness inside can we manage to resist them. to sum up, this story is a really good work of mark twain. the lesson i’ve learnt from it makes me want to be an honest man sincerely and lets me not to worship money too much. i begin to regret not reading it earlier.

based on mark twain's novel, 'the millionaire pound note' takes an interesting satirical look at the hypocrisy stemming from class distinction in the 50s england. england is a country where class and wealth are given extreme significance, especially among the rich. the film shows the hypocrisy that existed among these people, how the rich are quick to change face when in an instant they find out that you're a man of wealth and how within the next moment they revert back to their condescending selves when all wealth is lost. interestingly, 'the millionaire' also briefly looks at how the english perceived americans in that era. rich americans were welcomed as outsiders and the poor were quickly shunned away. the fact that he's an outsider either makes him more appealing or the complete opposite. the story sticks to the main theme by emphasizing on the hypocrisy of the upper class society but at the same time it also creates a balance that prevents the movie from being a mockery of the british society. the movie drags at some point but the love story appears at the right time and there is plenty of comedy to keep one entertained. a charming gregory peck totally nails the part and the luminous jane griffiths is a treat. reginald beckwith, as peck's sidekick rock is amusing. the ending is a little predictable but the director does an overall good job by rounding it up and presenting his points.

i knew mark twain when i was a middle school student. in my memory, there is an article in my english textbook that written by him. at that time, i pay no attention to mark twain. however, i knew more about him after i learned the history and anthology of american literature, he appeals to me dearly and deeply. as a result, i read a part of his novels in part time. here i will introduce million pounds to you. before that, i will give some information about mark twain to you. and last, it comes my though.

samuel langhorne clemens (november 30, 1835 – april 21, 1910) was an american humorist, satirist, lecturer and writer, better known by the pen name mark twain. he was born in florida, missouri and brought up in hannibal, missouri. after his father's death in 1847, he was apprenticed to a printer and wrote for his brother's newspaper. he later worked as a licensed mississippi river-boat pilot. the civil war put an end to the steamboat traffic and clemens moved to virginia city, where he edited the territorial enterprise. on february 3, 1863, 'mark twain' was born when clemens signed a humorous travel account with that pseudonym. he often uses exaggerated ways to show his irony.

mark twain is most noted for his novels adventures of huckleberry finn, and the adventures of tom sawyer. he is also known for his quotations. during his life, clemens became a friend to presidents, artists, leading industrialists and european royalty. for i love the one million pounds note best, i would introduce it to you.

is there real free-lunch in the world? maybe there is! and such kind of “free lunch” strikes the poor and honest young man henry adams who has surprisingly got a one-million bank note from the brothers (roderick & oliver)。 as a matter of fact, the brothers had made a bet, if a poor, honest and clever people who come knocking on the door received the one million pounds, what will be happening to his life? the elder brother think that he would starve to death because he could not prove that the money belongs to him, will be arousing others’ suspicion, and even the banks do not let him deposit the money. on the contrary, the younger brother believes that he would live in a very good life. so the brothers lend the one million pounds to henry adams, and spent 30 days abroad.

from then on, henry adams becomes a bright focus of the money-priority society. later, the lucky young man experiences two sharply different treatments in the tailor shop. in the ball, people from every social class try every chance to show their friendship and flattery to the new millionaire. adams never has the chance to spend a penny because no one can change the million and he is soon living in a luxurious hotel suite, wearing expensive suits. no one asks him to pay bill, these are forwarded for later payment. he even gets the chance to go to the party that held by duke. fortunately, henry meets jane griffiths and fall in love with this beautiful woman. he also comes across his good friend. the man gives him some advice to earn money. 30 days has passed, henry adams asks his girlfriend company him to meet the brothers. out of his expectation, his girlfriend is the daughter of one of the brothers. and finally he got a very good job from the brother. and he lived a very happy life.

mark twain's short story of "one million pounds note" is a very good work. the article satires the thoughts of "money is everything," "money is omnipotent," and expose the ugly face of capitalist society. as we all know, the root of the story was the bet of the brothers. what is the bet actually? where does the attraction of the bank note lie in?

as far as i am concerned, the one million pounds note takes an interesting, satirical look at the hypocrisy stemming from class distinction in england. england is a country where class and wealth are given extreme significance, especially among the rich. the novel shows the hypocrisy that existed among these people, how the rich are quick to change face when they find out that you're a man of wealth and how within the next moment they revert back to their condescending selves when all wealth is lost. the story was based on the main theme by emphasizing on the hypocrisy of the upper class society but at the same time it also creates a balance that prevents the novel from being a mockery of the british society. the love story appears at the right time and there is plenty of comedy to keep one entertained. the ending is a little predictable but the director does an overall good job by rounding it up and presenting his points.

in my heart, herry was so luckily, not everyone can get the chance to use the million. i am so envious of the "lucky" of the heroine, but at the same time i would like to think that the reason why people carry favor with him is just that they attract too much important to money, isn’t it? money worship is shameful and should not be reaping more! money is not omnipotent, and in the world, there are many things that more important than money .

in this summer holidays, i read a book called t; great expectations>, it was written by charles dickens, one of the most famous english writers. he wrote lots of wonderful novels. this book is one of his compositions.

people always like to compare with their friends. it is a big foible of all the people. if other people have a lot of money, we also want to be rich. if all the people around us are poor , we never mind that we are very poor, too. we will not ashamed because of our folly. this is a social problem.

if we never possess anything, we will not mind we lost some thing. since we don’t want to be very rich ,we will not feel despond because poor.

the protagonist of this novel is pip (handel). his parents died when he was a baby. his sister had brought him up ‘by hand’. his sister married to joe gargery, the village blacksmith. they didn’t have much money, and pip never went to school to study. but he was often very happy .because all of his friends are like him. it isn’t very unfortunate to them, this is their lives. but by a chance, pip helped a convict; he gave much food to him. then he met miss havisham, a very strange old woman and she was very rich.

four years later, miss havisham wants pip to be removed from his home and educated as a gentleman who expects inherit a fortune when he grow up.

after hearing that . pip started to despise his poor friends. he even feel ashamed because he live with the poor man . pip’s ‘great expectations’ destroyed his life.

this novel told us that we cannot compare with others .don’t feel envy at the others money. and if one day you be very rich , please don’t despise your poor friends.

?robinson crouse》

daniel defoe, the writer of 《robinson course》was born in a merchant family in london in 1660. his novels were all finished at his senior age. the work《robinson crouse》

and《mole fronds》and so on significantly affected the development of fiction in britain and even in europe. he was also considered the “father of fiction in britain and europe”. he was just a merchant before he wanted to write frictions and he had never though about being a wrier. he had ever managed his own business such as underwear production materials industry, alcohol and tobacco industry and so on. he experienced bankrupt and lots of failures, but never gave up until he was at an old age. where he falls over himself, where he picks himself up. while managing corporation, he constantly participated in the politic activities at the same time. he was sent to prison several times by police because of his aggressive comments on the policy made by local government. the articles written by him were numerous as he joined in about five magazines, which showed his extreme energy. the success of this book is never a coincident that all his experiences provided the thoughts and skills that were needed. it was said that this book had been published many times less than 《bible》. now, it is praised as the first full-length novel in the literary history of britain, which is a valuable contribution to the world literature.

?robinson crouse》was created when defoe was inspired by a true story. in the 1800’s, there was an england sailor whose name was alison; he once had a conflict with the captain, which was left on a small island. he had noting but sea and sand. with an amazing determination, he lived nearly five years and a half and eventually found and brought home by the famous navigator named luis in 1771. this event was once a panic in society at that time. he did not do a few special things deserved great respect, instead, what the sailor just did was some things necessary for survival. in general, he performed negatively rather than positively. but what defoe described was the represent of new class of capitalism which was an ideal hero who announced the importance of work and development. he was against just enjoying life and content with that people should be full of curiosity, the desire of conquer and the sprit of risk to develop outward, which proved the convention of western ocean civilization. this book highly praised the work sprite and quality of persistence in human being, which had created the new way for western realism.

the main plots of《robinson crouse》are introduced as follows:

robinson crusoe was born in the year 1632, in the city of york, of a good family. as he always wanted to travel around the world by sea, he did not listen to his father’s sincere

advice and left his home, becoming a crew of a ship. they were attacked by pirates somewhere near the shore of africa. after that he became a slaver. the life of being a slaver was actually tough and upset that he could not bear. finally, he got a chance and he grasped it and successfully escaped from that place. fortunately, he was saved by a spanish vessel on the way to brazil. when he arrived at brazil, he started to manage plantation and he made a great fortune. he made up his mind again to make a voyage as some people suggested him sailing to africa for trading black slave. he was knocked down again by his inclination to go to the sea. this time was beginning of his unfortunate. the ship encountered a big storm that they had never seen before. with six days’ and nights’ blowing and trembling, the ship was finally all swallowed up. no one had a life exclude robinson who was rushed to the beach of an unknown island by waves. although he luckily survived but he at the same time faced the challenge he had never experienced. in order to make a living, he began to transmit things in the ship to the island including grain, cloth, tools and so on. with these materials, he started his life in the island alone. living such a lonely life that no one talked to him and sometimes he did not say any word at all for about one week, he had to read《bible》to fulfill his sprit every day. however, with the amazing determination and persistent labor, he built his own house, gained grain, tamed goats and made cloth with animals’ leather. later, he adopted a wild man as his servant and named him friday. at the period of time, he experienced plenty of disturbances until a british ship came here and robinson helped the captain to subdue the rebels. after that, he was picked up back to britain where he had been away for 28 years. when he went back home, his parents had already passed away. robinson resumed all the profits of his plantation in brazil and gave part of them to people who had ever helped him.

one of the critics in britain said: “if people want to grasp the sprit that is full of energy and confidence, nothing better than defoe and ,《robinson crouse》. that is, as the classic adventure, doer and colonist, robinson always has its valuable place in the history of didacticism.

?the book thief》

everyone has the same start that he or she comes to the world crying and the same ending that is death. in the western myth, death is cold and chill with a long sickle in his hand

to reap lives and take people away from the noisy world. the relater inwritten by markus zusak was the death who wondered around the streets taking away lives as god told him. however, the death was not indifferent. he used his dark eyes staring at some people’s sprits. when he reaped people’s lives, he could become tender as well. there was one germany girl called “the book thief” by him among all these sprits he focused on.

the girl’s name was liesel meminger. she had ever stolen six books totally and written a fiction < the="" book="" thief=""> according her own experience. that was the reason why the death called her “the book thief”. the death was pretty tender to the girl: she lived a long life and finally passed away peacefully in her sweet sleeping. however, the death nearly took everybody’s life one by one around her: first, her father as a member of german party was sent to the prison. later, she watched her brother being killed who was only six years old; several years later, her adoptive parents were murdered by germany soldiers. rudy, a boy who smiled a lot and ran like a bird was killed as well.

planes, tanks, bombs and so many other modern products were much more precise and efficient to take away lives, which made the death appear lots of times everyday. dead bodies, wandering sprits and the busy death were the pictures described by this book. it was something to tell people that no truth in people’s life and death was the final meaning. and because of that the fiction also hid a question that where was the meaning of living when we faced the final existence of death? we can see from the book that the meaning doesn’t lie in the lifestyle of hitler which is emphasizing struggling by oneself, standing on the top of the privilege and building his plan on dismissing others’ life. living like this is worse than dyeing directly. likewise, the meaning of life does not lie in giving up thinking about life, disposing of inner humanism and ignoring and insulting lives which are filled with weakness. these nazi people ignored jews who suffered a lot, which resulted in the final ending that their lives gradually became noting with development of the world war two.

the massage 《the book thief》tries to convey is quite simple: it is the very reason that we can not resist death why the real stuff is the most valuable treasure god gives us. every life, regardless of germen or jew and child or adult deserves to be respected equally. the girl’s name was liesel meminger who became an orphan after her father’s being caught, her brother’s death and his mother’s missing. what a great sorrow for such a little girl who was

only 9 years old. inferiority, stubbornness, flimsiness and loneliness fill up her heart and she always longed for love and safety. she just wanted to get relief and suck the sprit energy from the words in the book stolen by her to prevent herself from loneliness. the life of max vandenburg who was a jew deserved respect. in order to escape the ethnic cleaning, he had no way but lived a life in the basement of beumer’s house like a mouse that could not exposed to the sunlight. what he eager for was a life with freedom and dignity. when residents of hammill block hid in the bomb shelter for safety, max took a risk going out basement to see the moon though the window at which he hadn’t looked for nearly 22days without considering the threat from the air. he came back to the basement and wrote the beautiful but desperate sentence:“stars lighted up my eyes while looking though out the window of hammill block.” the rights of being loved, living and freedom combined together and that is the respect to lives. they always shouted to love and concern which has surpassed concept of racial, sexism, age, blood relationship and so on. in, the doer was liesel’s adoptive father-hans hubermann. he respected every life. he helped his adopted daughter to scatter the nightmare, strake her sorrow, teach her writing and reading and give her endless love. in spite of knowing about the dander of taking jews in, he decided to protect max vandenburg as much as he could. when he watched jews were captured by germen on the street, he couldn’t help approaching and giving the old jew a piece of loaf in his hand. he was beat heavily by the germany soldiers because of that. the same thing happened when the person was leisel’s adoptive mother, rose hubermann who had this kind of love as well. she yet couldn’t know a lot about her daughter’s inner world like his husband did, but she could hold her daughter’s hands firmly while the plane throwing bombs. the smart, strong and bold woman who brought the hot food to max at the first time accepted him with her real action. this kind of parents had this kind of kid who’s like liesel. she read books for people who hid in the shelter when bombs exploded outside in order to comfort them. she lived with max and bowman’s. they loved each other, cared each other and enjoyed mutual respect and emotion, finally becoming relatives who were bone of the bone and fresh as close as fresh and blood. she changed this kind of emotion as the deep sympathy to the whole jews.

in, it was the war brought by hitler that killed numerous people like the couple of bowman as one hand, on the other hand, it was the people who ought to have

been already forgotten that survived with the help of bowman. they were “the book thief” liesel, max and so on. on the one side, there was nonsense death and destruction going on, on the other side, love that resisted death and subdued death was being created. this was such a complex world that made death confused and moved deeply.

英文的读后感篇4

pride and prejudice is my favorite novel, which impresses me for a long time. it describes a love story mainly between elisabeth, who i like the best, and a rich and proud man, darcy.

the story began with the arrival of a crowd of rich men who rent a house near the bennet. in a ball, elisabeth gave such a bad impression on darcys first pride that she refused darcys first proposal. darcy was so surprised by elisabeths refusal that he loved elisabeth more deeply. and elisabeths antipathy made darcy realize his shortings. he was not angry about elisabeths censure, but also he changed his previous proud attitude.

during elisabeths travel in darcys manor. darcy was very nice to her uncle and aunt, different from previous proud attitude. when one of elisabeths sisters ran away with wickham, darcy helped elisabeth find her sister and prevent her sister from the loss of reputation, with nobody knowing that it was he who helped the bennet. so many changes in darcy eliminated elisabeths prejudice. at last it end with their marriage.

taking the daily life as its material, this story reflected the life and love in a conservative你 and blocking england town. it reflected the authors view about marriage that it is fault to marry for property, money and status and it is also foolish to take these elements into account. in fact darcys pride manifested the gap between their statuses. since his pride existed, there is no ideal marriage between elisabeth and darcy. from the different attitudes from darcys two proposals, it reflected the feminine pursuit of personality independence and right equality, which is a progressive character from the image of elisabeth.

英文的读后感篇6

the story sounds like just a dog tale at first--a dog, buck, is kidnapped from his comfortable life in california and sold as a sled dog for the alaskan gold rush. while he endures the wilderness and the other dogs, buck learns that survival comes only with tooth and fang. this lesson brings him very close to his forbears, the wolves.

if you look deeper, call of the wild is as much a story of humans as it is a dog tale. buck encounters various incompetent masters who try to break his spirit. are we like this? but buck also learns to trust a master who is gentle and gives love. we can be like this, too.

call of the wild is not a story for the squeamish or very young. by involving us in the characters lives, jack london tells the truth. it is a life-and-death war between the harsh land and the soul every day. there is blood, death, cruelty--but its the truth.
